High Falls Aurora on 9/19/2023 at 12:36am
I've been trying to shoot the aurora over High Falls for several years. But after spending a couple hours sitting in a river earlier this evening, I almost didn't try. A 50-minute drive and 15-minute walk to High Falls just didn't sound too appealing. However, you miss 100% of the pictures you don't shoot. What did I have to lose?
The drive up looked hopeful, but once onsite, I appeared to have been skunked yet again. High level clouds had rolled in, so I shot a few sequences until heavier clouds obscured the show. I didn't realize until later what I had captured.
The aurora had strengthened during my drive, and those "clouds" where actually sheets of light. What threw me off was the lack of structure ... just sheets of light. This wasn't the aurora scene I had imaged at High Falls. After several attempts when the aurora just didn't show up, this night was almost too much. But I'll take it!
