Blossom

All things considered, the best time of year to view the aurora is around the Spring and Fall equinox. At that time, the Earth's magnetic field is most receptive to the incoming charged particles of the Sun.
Such was the case when the aurora oval teased us the previous evening, shining all night long but never developing beyond a faint pale green glow. The oval returned the next night, this time brighter with more promise. Sure enough, it blossomed into a nice pillar display that lasted a couple hours before fading back into a pale green glow.
